| Comments (English): I stayed at G.K Riverview Homestay after finding it and booking online. I had been living in Sri Lanka for 5 weeks before this as I was working as a volunteer. I was a little nervous about going on alone to India as I really didn't know what to expect. On arrival at Cochin airport though I was welcomed by George Kutty himself and transferred to his Homestay. I was immediately made to feel very welcome by himself and his family. The accomodation was simple but lovely with fantastic views and hammocks to relax in. I was able to enjoy excellent home cooked keralan food which will stay in my memory forever-it was so delicious. I only stayed for 1 week but wish that I could've stayed much longer and I definitely hope to return there one day. I was able to get a good feel for the keralan way of life and feel that I managed to see a lot thanks to George. Even though I was single female travel I felt very safe at all times and ventured by bus into town alone one day without any problems. | Comments (English): We (a late 30s North European couple) have stayed at GK Riverview Homestay twice (2006 and 2007), and it is a homestay we will be returning to whenever we go to this part of Kerala. Staying at George Kutty's homestay was one of the highlights of our trips to Kerala. Not only is he and his wife, Dai, and the rest of the family, very friendly, helpful and accommodating, but the location right in the middle of the backwaters in peaceful surroundings is perfect for both relaxation and activity. There are no tourists in this area and plenty of opportunity to experience village life along the many canals. There are 4 spotlessly clean rooms located 50 metres behind the main house with a view over rice fields, and hammocks for relaxation. Our room was one of the few rooms on our trip that was the only accommodation on our trip that was equipped with everything we needed like toilet paper, soap, candles, incense, mosquito screens in place of window class, additional mosquito protection and hot water. The rooms are basic, but suitable for the location. We found that we weren't actually in the room as much as we were in other locations; simply because there was so much to do elsewhere. And relaxation was done outside. Our stay included three meals a day of the most delicious homemade South Indian food you are likely to taste. Most of the ingredients are from their own garden and the food is as such mostly organic. Also, they managed to flawlessly create vegan meals. We had asked for vegan food when we contacted the homestay via email, and it was not a problem providing this. George, who speaks near perfect English, can arrange a stay in a houseboat if you want, and it is even possible to have a local tour in his own canoe. The local ferry stops a 20 minute walk from the house from where it is possible to go on a 4 hour round trip, including a 1 hour stop in a backwater village, for Rs. 15 per person. As a bonus, you will doing your little bit to limit pollution by staying at GK Riverview since all trips to and from the house are done in a rickshaw running on biogas; guests are usually picked up in Kottayam by George in this rickshaw. By doing this, the risk of getting lost or being overcharged is eliminated. It is possible to get a bus to the homestay (plus a 10 minute walk). Finally, it is commendable that the homestay employs a man with a disability (deaf); many disabled people in India have to resort to begging in order to make a living. If you are not staying at GK Riverview Homestay, you should still consider staying at another homestay. The homestay phenomenon is unique and much more likely than a hotel to give you memorable experiences. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
